MLB Trade Deadline: Five Teams to Watch as Executives Weigh in on Wild Scenarios
The trade deadline is approaching, and teams are starting to make honest assessments of their current standing. With the season at 40 games old, it's time for some teams to start making moves. Here are five teams to watch as the trade deadline approaches:
- New York Mets
The Mets are struggling and are not expected to turn things around. They have three top trade chips in Freddy Peralta, Clay Holmes, and Bo Bichette. Peralta and Holmes are free agents after the season, while Bichette is under contract but may be traded due to his poor performance.
- Detroit Tigers
The Tigers are in a tough spot with Skubal sidelined for two months and other starters on the IL. They are only 2.5 games out of first place in the AL Central, but if they fall out of the race, they may be forced to trade Skubal, who has had three arm surgeries and is earning $32 million.
- San Francisco Giants
The Giants are underperforming and may be forced to trade some of their biggest trade chips, including Robbie Ray and Logan Webb. They are also looking to select UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky in the amateur draft.
- Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks are in no-man's land and may be forced to trade some of their starters, including Zac Gallen and Eduardo Rodriguez. They are also looking to trade center fielder Alek Thomas.
- Houston Astros
The Astros are struggling and may be forced to trade some of their star players, including Christian Walker, Josh Hader, Jeremy Pena, and Yordan Alvarez. They are also looking to trade third baseman Isaac Paredes.
In addition to these teams, there are other notable trades and developments, including the San Francisco Giants trading Patrick Bailey to the Cleveland Guardians and the Padres' prized pitching prospect self-deporting to Mexico.
